![]() That’s a remarkable achievement for any band.Īfter that period, it started to feel like they began to lose their identity, opting to rely on a more segmented “here’s the sort of black metal song, here’s the mostly prog metal song”, and it all just seemed a bit more lifeless. Sure, there have been some bands that have released some truly strange and unique albums during that time, but not so consistently or with such volume. Beginning with Blodhemn and ending with Vertebrae, Enslaved put out an astonishing 7 albums in 10 years, all of which showcased an adventurous spirit and fearlessness that no other band in black metal history can touch. ![]() But, as a listener, it’s disheartening to hear the way that bands that have changed my life and even enhanced some of the best moments of my life would rather opt for noodling, middling prog than continue to build upon the foundation they’ve laid down beforeĮnslaved, in my opinion, had the best run of consistently challenging, truly exceptional, forward-thinking metal albums of any band in metal history. Even at my best, I have 1% of their instrumental and song writing talent. I’ll say upfront that both bands have created more great music than I’m ever going to be capable of. The prime examples of this pattern I’m lamenting are Enslaved and Opeth. With some exceptions, I think it’s often meandering, focused on note quantity just for the sake of it, and completely lacking in emotional weight. In the interest of full disclosure: I’m not much of a prog rock/metal fan in the first place. I’d even venture to say that if a band manages to craft a wholly unique sound, and then eventually settles on a sound that is mostly “prog” they’ve actually regressed. ![]() ![]() “Going prog” isn’t a meaningful progression in extreme metal bands. With that said, I’m going to express an opinion about some of my favorite 90’s black/death metal bands that some of you will vehemently disagree with. Allow me to start by noting that responses of “Who the fuck are you to judge another bands progression?” or “Fuck you, your band isn’t that good/sucks anyway” are completely valid.
